chessboard for the bauhaus chess pieces
design naef around 1980
maplewood veneer, partially printed black
36 x 36 cm, 1230 g
the bauhaus chess pieces existed in a wide variety of forms during the bauhaus years; today, the most radical solution to this design task is produced by naef: all figures are assembled from simple elementary bodies. the new shapes are intended to show the function - the possible movements in the game of chess. nothing reminds us of the traditional figures of queen, king and pawn, and the new figures no longer have a pedestal.
the board was offered in different variants: from the glass chessboard for the luxury edition to the multi-fold version made of cardboard glued on textile. more common was a simple board with a raised edge bar, but without the usual designations for the fields.
around 1980, the production of chess pieces was resumed by the naef company. at that time, the manufacturer designed a new chessboard appropriate to the radical design - without any borders and without numbers and letters.
