like the bauhaus lamp, bauhaus chess developed into a design icon - and not without reason. josef hartwig designed it according to the following concept: from the imitation of combat to a purely abstract game of the mind. why does the horse have to look like a horse, a runner like a runner or even a bishop? what does this have to do with the function of the token on the board? nothing, really. moving away from pictorial figurines, hartwig focused on the function of the game pieces: the basic shapes of the cube and ball result individually or in combination in the gait, the volume and the value of the pieces. the present form, which was first put into production in september 1924, therefore seems compelling. the perfectly finished 32 chess pieces are made of maplewood and are packaged in a box made of beech wood. a matching chessboard is sold separately.
