oskar schlemmer: the human. tuition at the bauhaus

the programme of the famous »bauhausbücher« from the 1920s also included a publication by oskar schlemmer with the title »stage elements«. however, the journalistic possibilities dwindled around 1929/30 due to the great depression. it was not until 1969 that the present volume could be compiled in schlemmer's legacy. it is based on schlemmer's lecture notes from his 1928 course »der mensch«, which he was unable to make into a book. as one can clearly see, his conception was congruent with that of the bauhaus in a way that only gropius and moholy-nagy could have created. as important as the problems raised by technology and their mastery may have been for the bauhaus, the goal to which everything was and remained subordinated was the social being of the human and, in spite of all, the individual.
