the memoirs of an architect from four countries, reprinted here for the first time in full length, are an impressive document of an extremely important internationally active architect and urban planner of the 20th century: fred forbat (1897-1972) worked in his 50 years of working life in germany and hungary, in the soviet union, for a short time in greece and most recently in sweden. and has left his mark both with his built work and with numerous publications in each of these countries. forbat, who came from a jewish family in pécs, hungary, was exposed to several political upheavals on his long journey, which forced him to move or emigrate due to his origin or convictions. fred forbat, who maintained intensive contacts and sometimes close friendships with the most influential architects and urban planners of the 20th century, was particularly capable of depicting the developments of those decades. therefore, it is to be regarded as an extraordinary stroke of luck that the book manuscript, together with the illustrations personally selected by forbat, has been preserved and can now be published.
