the memoirs of the hungarian woman of jewish origin, who was politicized at the bauhaus, bear witness to an eventful artist's biography that was shaped by national socialist terror, resistance, escape and exile. etel mittag-fodor (1905-2005) studied at the bauhaus from 1928 to 1930, where she attended the preparatory course, the advertising and printing workshop and the photography class with walter peterhans. in 1933, during a later internship at the bauhaus, she and her husband, the bauhaus member ernst mittag, took part in an underground action against the nazi regime and emigrated with him to south africa in 1938. there she initially continued to work as an architectural and children's photographer and was involved in the anti-apartheid movement.
